DISCOVERY TRAINING CAMP

Discovery Training Camp is intended for boys in the 4th and 5th grade. It is a pre-academy camp that is designed to teach team building through the Patrol Method. A boy who attends this camp will get an introduction to the academy and it is staffed by both local Discovery Ranger Commanders and JLTA Graduates. The boys are asked to attend the camp in groups of 4 from their local outpost and bring a local commander with them to act as their advisor and instructor. This is an overnight camp, the boys arrive on a Friday evening and graduate on Saturday. They sleep indoor at the training center and there is no camping or cooking outside. They are provided with all meals, books, patches and a special beret. The uniform for this camp is class C and this mean they wear a Royal Ranger large emblem t-shirt and jeans for their uniform. There is another camp the boys can take in their local outpost prior to attending this one, it is called Basic DTC. It is a video course that focuses on the Patrol Method and the many jobs that the boys may do a member of a local patrol. Anyone who completes Basic DTC prior to attending DTC will receive a graduates Tomahawk once they attend and complete DTC. These two camps now make up the Trail to the Tomahawk. Although these camps do not count toward a boy earning his graduates saber for the Academy, they are a great introduction to the JLTA camps and they are specially designed for the Discovery Rangers only. A boys also earn points toward Ranger of the Year by attending these camps.
